About me
An artist living between nature, line and teaching.
Hello, I'm Kristiina Avel (b. 1991, Iisaku) - an artist and art teacher whose practice spans printmaking, painting, drawing and (digital) illustration. My work weaves together manual precision and conceptual clarity - the energetic line of a linocut, the fine detail of electroetching and the speed of painterly brushwork all serve the same purpose: to bring into view what is close to my heart.
At the heart of my work are animal rights, ecology and social awareness - conveyed not through slogans but through situation. I create spaces where the viewer can think for themselves and find their own position. My environmental awareness extends from subject matter to materials: I work with electroetching instead of acids, reuse printing plates, make my own oil paints and use only vegan materials.
I live and work in the countryside, drawing inspiration from nature and everyday observation. I have studied at Tartu Art School, the Estonian Academy of Arts and the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. Teaching art to young people keeps my eye fresh and curious.
